Can commodification of labour be self-limiting?
in Making work more equal

Commodification of the labour relationship is a rising concern in scholarly circles in Europe and elsewhere, and authoritative scholars like Jill Rubery have traced it to the progressive demise of the so called standard employment contract. Payment-by-voucher systems can be seen as an instance of commodification, and the present chapter offers an account of the rise of such a system in Italy, contextualizing it by comparison with the CESU in France and mini-jobs in Germany. Key questions are whether even rampant forms of commodification exhibit built-in stabilisers, and what can be learnt from the Italian experience in order to draft more effective regulation?
