highlighted in accounts of her life.
It is just as likely, though, that my sister was named after my
grandmother’s sister, Leonie. Or perhaps it was a fortuitous double
naming for her and for Eleanor Rathbone.
Leonie Kahn, née Schwarz, was born in Busenberg, in the Palatinate
region of south-west Germany, on 30 August 1891. She was the
youngest of the seven children of Sara Apfel and Jakob Schwarz.

Leonie had two older sisters – Rosa, born in 1872, and Bertha (my
